The Chazuka Project celebrated its first anniversary as a UK registered charity in November…and what a first year it has been! 2020 has seen the whole world turned upside down by the coronavirus pandemic, including for the people of Chazuka, Malawi. The school had to close for months and the children and teachers have had to adapt quickly to homeschooling and other measures to help protect the community from the virus.
Thankfully, Chazuka has managed to avoid an outbreak so far and the school was able to reopen in October. Now as the New Year approaches, we want to focus on the future by funding a new floor for The Chazuka School to make it a cleaner and safer space for the children to learn for years to come.
Why does the school need a new floor?
The Chazuka School opened in February 2019 after a three-year build, as we believed that the children of Chazuka deserved somewhere safe and accessible to learn.
Once the classroom was built, the main priority was finding and securing amazing teachers to provide the children with the best education possible. We were successful in employing the wonderful Grace and Ashia, who very quickly became the beating heart of the school.
The children love their school. Not every child has the opportunity to go to school in Malawi, especially in rural villages like Chazuka, so the school gives the children a great sense of pride.
Although the children love going to school each day, they currently sit on the floor on mats as we haven’t been able to build a floor for the school yet. The floor is sandy and this results in their clothes and books getting dirty, which is far from ideal, especially for the children of Chazuka who have such pride in their school and care a lot about keeping their school books, equipment and uniform safe and tidy. This is even more of a problem in the dry season, where it gets very dusty and the children are at risk of being bitten by dust mites.

How can you help?
This Christmas, we want to give the children of Chazuka the gift of a cleaner and safer space to learn. By supporting our #SantaFloors Christmas appeal, you can help us ensure that the floor of the school is completed ahead of the next dry season and that the children feel an even stronger sense of pride in their school.
We would also like to provide a festive meal for the school children, staff, volunteers and parents to celebrate their hard work and resilience during a very challenging year.
A new floor will cost approximately £600, so if just 60 people generously donate £10, then we will reach our target.
This Christmas may feel quite different for all of us but together we can build a cleaner and safer space for the children of The Chazuka School.
Can you be our #SantaFloors this Christmas and give the best Christmas present you can by helping us reach our £600 target?
Zikomo…Thank you.
